AK/SA 85M Advice Requested

If one were to have an SA 85M Sporterized (A/K Hungarian FEG Receiver/KBI Import) and wanted to add a pistol grip...and maintain 922r compliance, what would/should one do?

Yeah, I've read a lot of sites...and just seem to get confus-der and confus-der.

As I understand it, as an unaltered Sporter, I can use any Mag...True?

Now I really don't think the stock (thumb-hole) makes a lot of difference in performance; nevertheless, one would probably like to at least keep the original stock protected since it has numbers matching the piece. Therefore, add a pistol grip stock. (Yeah, I know this isn't a collector piece but still...)

Y'all ARE buying this so far, right?

OK, so what would you do (or have you done) to bring it in compliance w/922r and what stock and handguards would you think would be best?...and, yes, I know this is a subjective opinion, but still interested in your thoughts .

Also, in the conversion to Pistol Grip, are the mags and stock parts considered 922r compliant parts?

I think I would prefer the longer NATO-length stock. I'm sure lots of y'all here have done this conversion and know the best parts and suppliers.

I just don't want to re-invent the wheel .

Appreciate your thoughts, advice and opinions.

Ask this in the AK section at AR15.com or ak47.net, or just search there, you'll find your exact answer.

The bottom line is that to convert it to original configuration you'll have to make the parts count right, IOW, just swapping the PG won't be kosher, you'll have to swap a bunch of other stuff.

I'm no AK expert, so I don't know the exact parts, but you can swap the cheapest ones out, rather than the more expensive. Basically you can only have 10 of the 20 listed parts made outside the US if it's taken out of 'sporter' configuration.

BTW, last I heard, no one had ever been prosecuted under 922r. I'm jes sayin'...:bear_w00t:

922r says it's illegal to BUILD a non-sporting rifle from imported parts. it doesn't say anything about POSSESSION or PURCHASING said gun.

you would need a good lawyer and you would still lose your rifle to the evidence locker, but i don't see you going to jail unless they could prove you were the one who converted it.

you did buy this gun used, already in it's non-sporting configuration didn't you?

btw, here is a checklist of the parts and a neat little calculator to figure what would need to be changed.

As long as there is no muzzle brake/threaded muzzle you will need 5 US parts for 922r compliance (6 if it has a brake). The simplest solution would be a US made butt stock and pistol grip and a US made magazine (the mag counts as three parts:mag body, follower and floor plate). If you like to tinker you can change out the fire control group (3 parts) plus the butt and grip.

Thanks Jack, I know the parts count on the M14, but not so much on the AK.

I do have a problem with the mag aspect, though, as then you have to use the US mag for it to be legal. I did this with my Chicom M14s, it's easy as I have all USGI mags, but with an AK most of the best and cheapest (funny that those would go together) mags will be foreign made, and it'll be cheaper to replace three more expensive parts than buy a fleet of US mags.

JMO.

I agree that most US mags are crap. Honestly you would need only one to store with the weapon, if you get my drift:wink:. Otherwise It's change out the fire control parts time to US parts, they don't cost a lot but you need three hands to deal with the shepard's hook. Pain in the rear end.
